Benefits

No amount of intellectualizing will convince you of this. It must be practiced for the benefits to be experienced.Regardless of what Japa you use, one of the most important principles is the practice of constant remembrance. By cultivating such a steady awareness many benefits come:

1 One who practices japa in this way will find that the challenges and
stressors of daily life are not nearly as disturbing.

2 The Japa gives a place of refuge, an oasis in which the mind can rest.

3 It is not escape, denial, or repression, but a tranquil companion.

4 The objects of the senses begin to lose their control over actions.

5 The incoming streams of negative thoughts, emotions, and desires from the
unconscious mind attenuate, or become weaker.

6 The japa gradually becomes a best friend of the mind.

7 japa leads one in the direction of deeper and subtler spiritual experiences.

Courtesy japa

Good japa is like flying down the highway in fourth gear. Good japa produces inspiration, realization, detachment, increased desire to serve, attraction to study scripture, and an ability to see maya's workings more clearly. And there are so many more gifts good japa delivers. Yet we deprive ourselves of these gifts when we chant "courtesy japa."

Common pitfalls

  • “Prajalpa-japa”: Unnecessarily talking while chanting.

  • “Dive-bomb japa”: Falling asleep while chanting (head nodding off).
  • “Radar japa”: constantly looking around.
  • “Machine-gun japa”: much too fast while shaking the finger.
  • “Jibber-japa”: it is just gibberish, no one can understand it.
  • “Day-dreamy japa”: not concentrating, following the wandering mind.
